Copy of letter from Emma (Emily) Younghein Scott to her niece Shirley Younghein
daughter of Samuel son of Julius Younghein dated 6 jun 1950.
Dear Shirley,
As you reguested I replied to your letter of May 22nd. At the time I was not
equal to answering your questions about our family completely. even now I find
to give the information you lack would really require a personal interview or
shall we say a visit; it involves much more than I am equal to writing,as it
would really become book length if I noted all items of interest; for a family
does alot of living in and over a period of 70 years.Your grandfather name was Julius the diminutive of which is Jule. He was a
good man and known as such everywhere and came from a very splendid background
which included wealth. Was a Civil War Vetran -badly wounded in action.Between the two of us there was a very deep bond of love and I grieved deeply
and silently for many years after his death. Not until I saw the love between
you and your father had I ever known anyone who loved their father as I did. I
could feel the love between you two. I was, I think, only four when he went
on.Among some pictures you should have found a very splendid picture of my
father as a young man in uniform. He grew heavier as he grew older.Anna Margaretta, known as Margaret was my mother, your grandmother. She was a
very beautiful velvet blue eyed blond-loved and respected everywhere and she
was a truely remarkable women in her courage and ability-"my most unforgetable
character".When these two married it was also a union of their two families; mother hadone
child, a daughter and father had four children . Before I was born or Icould
remember, these older children were out on their own, married or passed on in
childhood. My mother was a good mother and she must have been a good
step-mother too, because all of the first wifes relatives, her father, mother, sister, brothers and their wives all loved her very dearly and were her
loyal friends until death and only just recently here in my home some of that
family remarked about "how much we all loved Aunt Margaret. She liked them
too,and there maybe a picture of Mrs. Andersons great grandparents among Sams
pictures. It would be a small photograph of an elderly couple.
I always knew my sister Sophia because she came home frequently and was nice
to me-she married and had a nice family, all of whom are well married and all
of whom are well married and all of whom loved Aunt Emily, when they were
children and I think they still do- at least they write me lovingly and remind
me of happy days and hours of by gone days.
Mother told me much about her step-children and always spoke kindly of them,
especially of the little girl who was deaf-she must have loved her more on
account of jer affliction. She was sent to a Deaf School and learned to talk
and write-She wrote home fro, school saying; "I love very much to pray." She
and a sister died in childhood.
John Y. and his sister, never ever wrote me a single line or ever expressed
any interest in me-so I never knew either of them or their families. I saw Anna
when I was a little girl twice when she visited my mother-never did see her
husband . She went West.
So, you see our family was of the second and last marriage and Sam was my
"big brother"-he and I were always good friends-after mother died we all went
our different ways. I nursed in Denver a year before Sam married- I did not
live with him, but saw him frequently. After his marriage I tried very hard to
be friends with you all,but met with so much opposition I finalyy gave up.
Henry and Edward both married nice girls who not sister-in-laws but became
sisters to me whom I hear from often- Henry recently deceased. Neither had
children. Henry looked very much like his mother-blue eyed blond-eyes deep set.
When I saw you I thought I was seeing my mother again-you looked so like her
and you worked just like her too. I shall always cherish that memory of you.
Wm. never married; he and I has most of the care of our mother in her
terminal illness-he and I made a team in illness, having natural ability-
When my mother went on, I was left alone as you are now, so I can sympathize
with you. I got along allright; we always do if we have courage and
determination, and you will do the best can always and Angels cannot do better
than that-Remember-"Sorrow will not lodge in your heart, for even a day, if you
greet it with a song. (I always thought as much of these two girls as I did my
brothers.)
One of my cherished childhood memories is of our Sundays which always seemed
to have a Halo around them, because Mother and Father always took is to Sunday
School and church. I was told about God and the Master Jesus until that became
as real to me as my parents and home, and they are still very real to me, and
always wil be.
Mrs. Andersons great grandmother was a dear old lady and she always shook
hands with me and said giving me a little pat with her left hand, "do you love
Jesus"? In a swanky antique shop last week, I saw many pieces of furniture like
she had.
You have found a picture of mother which is only a picture of her grief
and worry when she was left alone with five childen to feed, cloth and provide a
home for all of which she did wonderfully well.
Have I told you all you wanted to know? I can probably help out, on some of
those pictures if you have a special interest in any of them.
I thank you, and think it was sweet of you to give me "Sammies"
address-should I write him? I hope you havn't grieved until you are ill.
I notice I still havn't answered your inquiry about Mary and me, but I just
cannot write more now I shall have to do that in another letter, after I hear
from you again, and if you still want to know - briefly will say we still have
our good husband and daddy.
I would like you to feel that I am your friend as well as your Aunty. Let me
know if I am to keep on writing to you and in the mean time I shall say Mizpah
(Mitzvah)sp-With love-Aunt Emily.
